MISSION 150 - WELLINGTON / BANKSTOWN / WELLINGTON

On Sunday 8th August, a young family discovered what it feels like to be lifted up on "angel" wings when Angel Flight arrived in Wellington for the first time to help them access desperately needed medical help in Sydney.

With a child suffering from Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder [ADHD] and suspected of being Autistic, Rebecca Harding certainly has her hands full. However, as if that wasn’t enough to cope with, Rebecca’s second child, who still hadn’t slept through the night, may also be suffering from a similar condition.

"It was really hard getting help for Travis," Rebecca said.

"When the Royal Far West Children’s Health Scheme in Sydney said they wanted to see Travis get help, I experienced unbelievable relief. I know not to expect miracles but it’s good knowing they were there when I needed them," she said.

But, with the news that at last she was going to receive the help she had prayed for came the challenge of how she was going to manage the long journey to Sydney with a child who just couldn’t sit still for long, as well as taking care of her younger son.

"I made enquiries about subsidised air travel, but was shocked to find out just how much it would cost and I just couldn’t do it," she said.

"But a miracle did happen when Angel Flight said they would fly all of us, including my Mum Cherie, to and from Sydney at absolutely no charge. I was flabbergasted, and Mum and I just sat and cried when we heard the news. They gave me the help I needed to keep my sanity and help stabilise my son, they really are angels."

This story appearing in the Wellington Times.

A MESSAGE FROM CHERIE, REBECCA, TRAVIS & JORDAN:
"To those who we have never met at Angel Flight, who work tirelessly behind the scenes, leaving nothing to chance you truly are miracle workers. With all our hearts we thank you for everything you have done to make our mission possible and for making our load seem weightless in comparison. Thank you and God bless .... Cherie Rebecca, Travis and Jordan".

Angel Flight 1 comment by Roger Hadfield

"Hi everyone, had a good trip. The passengers were a bit nervy but they were alright. Got them there at 12.20pm. Think I will get a trailer for the Fuji... (Rebecca and Cherie had a little more baggage than expected.)"

Angel Flight 2 report by Wayne Cotterill

With gale force winds and severe weather conditions, Wayne decided not to fly the family. Instead, being a true Angel, he drove them home to Wellington, checking first that Travis was able to cope.

"It was good in a way, without the distractions associated with piloting an aircraft, being able to spend more time with my passengers. I can better appreciate some of the difficulties these people face. The affect on the lives of those family members of a person with complicated medical problems makes me realise how lucky we are when we and our own family members are well.

Angel Flight has brought releief to those who qualify for a much needed service. My passengers could not speak highly enough of all those associated with Angel Flight. Keep up the good work."
