MISSION 100 - GUNNEDAH / BANKSTOWN / GUNNEDAH
"Historic Angel Flight Mission out of Gunnedah"

On Tuesday 27th April 2004, at approximately 8.45am, Angel Flight pilot, Michael Barnier, from Boggabri, created history when he flew out of Gunnedah with local mother, Irene Lemon and her two-year old daughter, Shenoah, on board his Piper Arrow aircraft. In fact history was created twice, as this was not only be the first Angel Flight mission out of Gunnedah but it was also be the 100th mission in Australia since the launch of Angel Flight in April 2003.

At just six months of age, Shenoah experienced the first of recurring painful middle ear infections. Because of the recurring nature of her condition Irene was advised to take Shenoah to Sydney where a specialist will reviewed her case and with possibility of surgery at a later date.

"Naturally I want what is best for Shenoah, but was really worried about the long train journey to Sydney which was going to mean a stay of nearly a week to fit in her appointment with the availability of seats on the train," Irene said.

"It would have been really difficult for us both physically and financially so after I discovered just how hard it was going to be I contacted Karin Rule, Senior Case Worker at Gunnedah Oxley Community Options, to ask if Angel Flight could help me." In less than a week Angel Flight were able to locate a pilot who was available and everything was organised to make life just a little easier for Shenoah and her Mum. "I was absolutely amazed at their response to my request," Irene said.

"I was told that I was not allowed to worry about anything and when the flight was confirmed it was as though an enormous weight had been taken off my shoulders, I can’t thank them enough. The feeling I have is indescribable."

This story appeared in The Namoi Valley Independent, 27 April 2004.
Thank you letters from Irene.

Angel Flights 1 & 2 comments by Michael Barnier

"This was my third mission since joining Angel Flight and I must admit I tend to get a bit emotional when I see how dependent children are when they are unwell. I just want to do everything I can to help. I certainly tried to make the flight as comfortable and enjoyable as possible for Shenoah and her mother. It’s a great feeling being able to do my bit for the community and I’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback from other pilots and even strangers about what we are doing.

All in all a very successful flight - Shenoah was very happy and comfortable. Irene was extremely grateful for the help of Angel Flight.

We were picked up and driven to the clinic by Earth Angel Rory Delaney. Earth Angel Tina Brown picked us up and drove us back to Bankstown Airport. Both were very kind and efficient."Such is his enthusiasm for this very special service, Michael takes every opportunity to drop Angel Flight brochures into local GP’s waiting rooms and hospitals to ensure that the financially needy, whether they be children or adults, can attend major medical centres with minimum discomfort and inconvenience."
